Podcast for Trauma Survivors Gives Their Struggles a Voice

Beyond Your Past podcast with Matthew Pappas, CLC, MPNLP, on Mental Health News Radio Network

Beyond Your Past, a podcast hosted by Matthew Pappas, CLC, MPNLP, on Mental Health News Radio Network, aims to provide a platform for trauma survivors to heal and share their experiences.

The podcast grew out of Matthew’s blog Surviving My Past. Himself a trauma survivor, Matthew decided to leverage previous podcasting know-how from an NFL fan website into a weekly show documenting his personal battles and breakthroughs overcoming trauma. Beyond Your Past evolved into its current format of weekly interviews with other survivors of trauma and addiction who share their work and recovery journeys.

Being able to speak your truth, to answer the tough questions, to have breakthroughs just by talking to a guest on the show, it's all incredibly validating. It's a shame-breaking way of healing and receiving support.

Matthew said, “It's a way for me to use my voice, literally, to share my story. Being able to speak your truth, to answer the tough questions, to have breakthroughs just by talking to a guest on the show, it's all incredibly validating. It's a shame-breaking way of healing and receiving support. When you get things out of your head, in a safe place and share with others, you not only continue your healing but you help others as well. I help provide that safe place for survivors to share their story and for clinicians, coaches and advocates to share how their life's work is helping others."

Beyond Your Past’s core audience includes clinicians and coaches, mental health advocates, including bloggers and activists, family members, spouses and siblings of those who are survivors, and survivors themselves. In addition to giving survivors a voice, the podcast’s mission is to aid helping professionals dedicated to working with them.

Beyond Your Past airs once a week. Recent episode topics include Understanding the Long Term Effects of Bullying, Why Anxiety Keeps You Stuck and How to Overcome It and Living with Severe Dissociation and DID. Recent guests included author and survivor Larry Ruhl and Beth Rogerson, Ph.D., discussing the Internal Family Systems therapy model.

The podcast is one of over 30 airing on Mental Health News Radio Network, the world’s largest podcast network dedicated to mental health and well-being content. It is sponsored by Daily Recovery Support and INLP Center.
