Challenging public perceptions about service dogs, mental health, and disabilities

Based out of Madison, Virginia, Service Dogs By Warren Retrievers, or more commonly known as “SDWR,” places custom trained and bred service dogs for individuals with invisible disabilities like Diabetes, Autism, PTSD, and Seizure Disorders. Mental Health News Radio Network, commonly known as MHNR, based out of Asheville, North Carolina, is a network of podcasts focused on mental health and how it affects all aspects of individuals’ lives: Emotional, Physical, Financial, Spiritual, Entertainment, Sports, Politics, Technological, and more. MHNR has built a foundation on promoting service and therapy dogs in mental health treatment. Podcast host, Kristin Walker, has worked in the mental & behavioral health field for over 15 years visiting mental health facilities with her 4 therapy dogs. She feels the collaboration with SDWR is beneficial for both the network and organization. Kristin Walker and Dan Warren, President and Founder of SDWR, have since come together to discuss important topics like SDWR’s mission, the role of service dogs in autism therapy, and the challenges that face non-profit organizations working in the physical and mental health care field.
More co-hosted podcasts between SDWR and MHNR network are anticipated in the near future. Mr. Warren and Ms. Walker share common goals such as removing barriers that prevent individuals with disabilities from receiving resources and challenging public perceptions of diagnoses. They hope to collaborate on podcasts about PTSD service dogs, the impact of service dogs on the mental health of their handlers, and the toll chronic disease takes on families.

Since the partnership began, MHNR program director, Melanie Vann’s son, Malachi, has received an Autism Service Dog from SDWR. Malachi’s Autism Service Dog, Ramses, has been with the Vann family since March of 2017. SDWR trainers continue to work with Melanie on Ramses’s skillset to improve Malachi’s elopment, social anxiety, and sleep patterns. MHNR Network encourages families and individuals dealing with Autism to research an Autism Service Dog and the benefits one may offer.
